the origin story

writing and crying

substack is where "emilyisalive" was born. i found substack through a friend of mine who was on the precipice of a cross country move. she was writing about her final days in la and continues to write about her life in nyc. then i found out another friend of mine had a substack. i hesitate to say i had a desire to write because maybe that implicates me as yet another hannah horvath type (complicated), but i guess there was something in me that i finally felt brave enough to share. thank you to my friends for being brave first.

i love writing on substack. i love that it is low stakes. i love that i'm pretty anonymous. i love how people have talked to me irl about things i wrote. i even connected with a new friend from work over our own substack adventures. noah kahan said in an interview (on mythical kitchen's last meals hosted by josh scherer), "sad music doesn't make me sad, it makes me feel connected." so, i keep writing my sad sh*t :)

can you hear me? can you see me? can you see me? can you hear me or see me? can you hear and see me? or see me and hear me?

i will keep writing for as long as it keeps being fun. i try to publish once a month. occasionally movie reviews, occasionally cultural think pieces, mostly the going on's in my life and the meaning i extrapolate from it. you'll find such topics as a girl's first uti, paying taxes and trying not to kill yourself, a complete retelling of my dating history, and airports. i do hope to see you there!
